Brief summary

Period: 2018-2019
Project coordinator: Prof. Dr. Anne Reimers
Project collaborator: Carolin Schulze
Sponsor: Federal Ministry of Education and Research

Research alliance

The Associate Professorship of Educational Science in Sport and Health is implementing a new externally funded project. For “GenEffects”, the team of Prof. Dr. Yolanda Demetriou with Heidelberg University of Education (Prof. Jens Bucksch) and Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Prof. Dr. Anne Reimers). „GenEffects“ will receive a total of 470,000 euros in funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research until 2020.

Research project

Physical activity and sport make an important contribution to maintaining and improving mental and physical health (Carson et al., 2016). In addition, it has been shown that long sitting times have a negative effect on both health and general well-being (Alfes, Bucksch, Aue, & Demetriou, 2016). Despite the positive effects of an active lifestyle, an international study showed that only 9% of boys and 2% of girls achieve the WHO recommendations of 60 minutes of daily activity with moderate and intense intensity (Cooper et al., 2015). In contrast, girls sit more than boys (Bucksch et al., 2016). Within intervention studies, special attention should therefore be paid to gender aspects in order not to further exacerbate existing inequalities between girls and boys. To date, there are no systematic reviews that have analysed, using a gender-sensitive approach, the design, content and results of a wide range of intervention measures to promote physical activity and reduce sitting time. For this reason, the planned systematic reviews will examine and evaluate the gender sensitivity of intervention studies that promote or reduce the movement and sitting behaviour of children and adolescents aged three to 19 years.

To this end, a checklist will first be developed to assess the gender sensitivity of intervention studies to promote movement and reduce sitting times in childhood and adolescence (3-19 years). Subsequently, existing interventions will be processed using the checklist within the framework of several systematic reviews.

At FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg a total of three reviews will be written on the topics of general physical activity, physical activity in leisure time and active transport.

The Cochrane Sex/Gender Methods Group supports the project in developing a checklist for assessing the gender sensitivity of intervention studies. In addition, the colleagues provide advice in the preparation of the systematic reviews. The Cochrane Reviews introduced by the group are systematic reviews that summarise research findings on health care and health policy issues. This system is regarded as the central quality standard in international health research.
