ms-intakt: e-Training in MS

ms-intakt – Internet based physical promotion in persons with multiple sclerosis

The long-held belief that physical activity is harmful for multiple sclerosis (MS) patients has now been refuted – there is evidence for the positive effects of physical activity and training on endurance, muscle strength, fatigue, balance, depression and quality of life in MS patients (Tallner & Pfeifer, 2008). Despite the proven positive effects of sport and physical activity, there are still many unresolved questions regarding the dose-response ratio, the long-term nature of training effects, and long-term attachment to training offerings. The main reasons for this are the manifold symptoms of MS, which in comparatively few studies led to small and heterogeneous samples. In the present study, an internet-based home training programme – e-training – can be used to recruit a previously unattained number of subjects and thus make a valuable contribution to clarifying the dose-response ratio of physical activity in MS and thus to developing guidelines for physical activity in MS.

Aims:

  • Testing the effect of internet-based strength and endurance training on quality of life, fatigue, endurance, strength and balance in multiple sclerosis patients.
  • Review of the long-term commitment to physical activity / training through the program.
